NYC Ballet-Inspired Accessorizing

This past weekend, I had the pleasure (read: 75% pleasure... 25% of the numbers were a total snooze-fest) to attend the New York City Ballet production, Jewels at Lincoln Center.

Aside from the calmness of watching the dancers' light and fluid movements, my favorite thing about going to the ballet is being surrounded in the humbling beauty of the David Koch Theater.

That to-die-for art deco chandelier... the marble... the grandness... It's undoubtedly Manhattan style at its best–and also what inspired these accessory picks–which in my dream world I will be wearing to the next big show.

A Hate Letter to Cockroaches

Screen Shot 2014-01-22 at 12.49.37 PM.png

To the cockroach that trespassed in my apartment a few nights ago:

GET THE F OUT
You're not welcome here

Do you know how much anxiety you caused me?
Talk about PURE FEAR

My apartment is clean
It even smells like faint orange blossom

Any crumbs/ dirt/ scum that you like?
Nope–we don't got 'em

I don't care if you're looking to get out of the cold
If you're trying to find your friends
If you're hungry for mold

Don't ever think about coming back
I've got a SWAT team ready–and YES, it will attack

Oh Mr. Cockroach, all I ask is WHY?
Why are you so terrifying, ugly, and sly??

My advice: get a life
I hear this time of year, Rikers Island is nice

So gather your posse, pack your bags, and flee NYC
PLEASE just never ever EVER again bother ME!

sNOw THANKS

Another snowstorm. That's nice.

Ever since a little thing called the Polar Vortex of 2013 happened, a white blanketed NYC is neither pretty, exciting, nor fun. It took Larry LITERALLY 3.5 hours to commute home tonight–from LONG ISLAND CITY.

In this hellish winter, one thing's for sure–I'm staying IN.

For all of you out there that are holing up with me, here are some recommendations on how to spend your days in style.

On Becoming a Water Bottle Person

Not that I have an aversion to green living or anything, but I never thought I was one of those people–you know, reusable water bottle people. I mean, talk about a schlep.

But alas, as I find myself spending hours writing away at coffee shops, the ideas of purchasing overpriced containers of Fiji and/or bothering the barista to refill my paper cup with tap water every time caffeine dehydration kicks in appeal less and less.

And so I set out on the search for a stylish, practical (eek), easily tote-able H2O carrier. Which one do you think coordinates best with a Macbook Air and medium-coffee-with-a-little-steamed-soy?

What the Williamsburg Kids are Wearing These Days

Yesterday marked my longest Brooklyn marathon yet–of course I'm referring to time spent partying in the borough.

The day began with freshly made Bloody Marys at a Downtown Brooklyn housewarming shindig (shoutout to Deb and Ari for their sick apartment!) and concluded with a trip to some totally grungy bar near some weird J-train stop god knows somewhere in Wiliamsburg where a friend of friends' band, Automatic Toys, was putting on a show.

And quite a show it was.

After lead singer Nachum Peterseil and co. wrapped things up, things got gangsta (and I mean that in the best way possible). Killing it with awesome hip hop remix after remix, the bar's DJ got people seriously shakin' like woah.

While partaking in some of this dance floor magic, I couldn't help but take some style notes from my fellow bumpers and grinders.

Wild sneaks, gold separates, crop tops, and hats (see below) were among the trends I most frequently spotted. In other words, I'll be prepping my six pack a little more than my hair for the next time BK calls.

Forever 21 Striped Crop Turtleneck, $8.80
Neon Orange Beanie (Amazon), $8.91
Supra Skytop Sneaker (Revolve Clothing), $110
Knicks Hat (Lids) $34.99
Mink Pink Third Base Metallic Tee (Nasty Gal), $58
Stevie Wool Hat (Nasty Gal) $30
Fan Wristlet (Pixie Market), $30
Dimepiece Beanie (Patricia Field), $36
Nastal Gal Crushed Velvet Skirt, $48
Urban Outfitters Bra Top, $29

I Made This Soup... And It Was Amazing

photo (19).JPG

In preparation for today's I'm-not-leaving-my-apartment freeze, I turned to good old Martha Stewart for a healthy, hearty vegan soup recipe.

Ladies and gents, this is seriously where it's at for any time the temperatures dip below 32 degrees.

If you decide to cook a pot for yourself consider these delish recipe substitutions. I'm telling you, it came out da bomb:

-Use sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes
-Sub in kale for endive
-Use white beans instead of chickpeas
-Season with curry powder to taste
-Serve with wedges of toasted zatar-spiced whole wheat pita
